As per Tirreno-Adriatico tradition, this will be the iconic ‘tappa dei muri’ – the ‘wall stage’. The route begins with a large circuit, to be covered just once, from Osimo Stazione, through endless undulations across Recanati, Santa Maria del Monte, Macerata, Treia and Montefano, all the way to the finish line. The route then takes 3 laps of a really challenging circuit, with 4 walls: one that is not too difficult, leading up to Offagna; one across Abbazia, and – lastly – two brutal ascents up to Via Roncisvalle and Via Olimpia.
Final kilometres
The last 10 kms are extremely challenging. The route enters Osimo to tackle the ‘wall’ of Via Roncisvalle, which continues along Via del Borgo. The peloton will be riding on flagstone for over 1 kilometre, with an average 15% gradient, and peaks topping out at 22%. After a short and steep drop, the route climbs up the Via Olimpia for less than 1 km (rising with 16% ramps for a few hundred metres), and then enters the old town, still climbing slightly, on porphyry. The home straight is 300 m long, on 7 m wide tarmac.

Osimo

Osimo is a medium-large municipality (106 km2 ) located about 10 km from the Conero Riviera. The town covers a hilly area and has about 35,00 inhabitants. Its historic center stands on two hills side by side. On the higher one, called Gòmero, is the Cathedral San Leopardo (the Dome). As early as the 9th century B.C. on the hill of Osimo and on the high ground of Monte S. Pietro were settled by the Picenes, who established two distinct settlements with associated necropolises. Later, with the battle of Sentinum (today’s Sassoferrato) in 295 B.C., the Romans began the conquest of Picenum, involving Osimo as well (Auximum is its ancient name). The city’s underground hides a real secret city: 10 kilometers of tunnels, caves and secret passages carved into the sandstone, with carved figures and symbols to decipher. A fascinating mixture of history and spirituality that attracts the attention of thousands of visitors every year. The famous American band “The Orphan Brigade” has written an album entirely dedicated to the caves of Osimo, “Heart Of The Cave” is the title of the record.
